CHAPTER 7

In the Spider’s Lair

Selina Spider sat filing her nails. She was a very vain spider and spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to make herself beautiful. It wasn’t easy. Her philosophy was that power was directly related to image. So if she wanted to be the most powerful insect in Bugworld, she also needed to be the most glamorous.

She spent a fortune at the beauty parlor and felt she looked utterly stunning. The little talons at the end of her eight legs glowed a horrible deep blood red. Her eyelashes were curled and darkened. She thought this made her look incredibly attractive, but it really only made her beady spider eyes look even more evil. Her henchmen thought she was just as hairy and eight-legged as ever. None of them, of course, would ever dare to say that to her face. If they did, they were sure to be eaten.

Selina had spent the morning counting the profits from her new business, Anthills-2-Go. It was going extremely well. She had hoped it would be successful, but sales figures had topped her wildest dreams. Who would have thought that ants were sick of having their fragile nests stomped on by thoughtless humans, or crushed by larger animals? She was going to become even richer, and even more powerful. She was extremely happy with herself.

She gazed at her ugly reflection lovingly in a mirror. Nothing could stand in her way. Little did she know that four small insects were only a short distance from her beloved factory, planning to ruin her beautiful business.

Wormie led the gang to the outskirts of the factory grounds. They found an old anthill that had been used for research. From the top, there was a clear view of the drain that was dumping the waste into the stream. It was actually a fairly small pipe, around the size of a fist. But what was spewing out of it was the foulest, smelliest, yuckiest stuff that Wormie had ever encountered. It was amazing that such a small pipe could cause so much trouble. Wormie held his breath, but the stink seemed to seep into his skin. He felt absolutely filthy and longed to have a bath in the crystal waters of Sunny Stream. Except that Sunny Stream wasn’t crystal any more.

The friends gathered behind the anthill and went over their plan. As Wormie talked, he drew diagrams on the bare ground with a twig, making sure that everyone was clear about the part they would play. Bertie asked question after question and Lily patiently explained things to him and made him repeat them back to her to be sure that he understood. Bertie worked best with clear directions. After a while, Wormie was satisfied that everything was in place.

‘Okay, gang. This is it. Let’s go and stop this pollution once and for all.’ The others nodded and slipped off. The plan was in action, and the team were focused on what they had to do. The fact that Cyril’s numerous knees were shaking was just one of those unfortunate things.
